BREAKDOWN OF CHARACTERS

LORD GORING,  28-37 “Well-bred” and charming. “He is clever but would not like to be thought so.”  He presents himself as "a flawless dandy”, trivial and idle, but he is alert, observant, and possessing unsuspecting depth. He is fond of being misunderstood. It gives him a "post of vantage” In love with Mabel Chiltern.

MRS CHEVELEY,  27-40 “A genius in the daytime and a beauty at night” Intelligent, charming and cunning. “In all her movements she is extremely graceful. A work of art, on the whole, but showing the influence of too many schools.”

SIR ROBERT CHILTERN, 37- 45 A member of Parliament. Handsome, dignified, a “success.” “Intensely admired by the few, and deeply respected by the many. The note of his manner is that of perfect distinction, with a slight touch of pride.”

LADY GERTRUDE CHILTERN, 27-40 A “classic” beauty. Intelligent, high minded and holds her herself and others to the highest levels of conduct.

MABEL CHILTERN 20-24 “a perfect example of the English type of prettiness”. “Well bred”, charming, romantic, but also outspoken. Funny in a fesh and unselfconscious way. In love with Lord Goring and waiting for him to propose.

LORD CAVERSHAM, 60-75. Commanding presence. Irritable towards what he sees as his son’s (Lord Goring) idleness and triviality.

LADY MARKBY, 55-70 . A formidable presence, but surprisingly gentle and kind.
