The Playwright:
Oscar Wilde

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish satirist, poet and playwright widely known for his works, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Lesser known, though no less impactful, were his short stories and poems such as The Ballad of Reading Gaol and The Happy Prince and Other Tales. Remembered for a flamboyant persona and witty and sharp phraseology, Wilde delved into topics of morality, justice, romance, innocence and public vs private personas profoundly through his works. An Ideal Husband was written in 1895 as a commentary on the hypocrisy and conventionalism of Victorian England postulating that moral integrity without forgiveness is unsustainable in relationships.
