Meet “Divine Comedy” Cast Member Ian Geary

Ian plays Professor Tomas D’Esquivel in “The Coach of The Holy Sacrament,” one of two heavenly comedies featured in the Storm Theatre Company and Blackfriars Repertory Theatre co-production “Divine Comedy.”

Some say that they are born to act. For Ian Geary, this is literally the case when his mother went into labor while on her way to a set construction. Born to two members of the Georgia Shakespeare Company, it was only natural for Ian to develop an affinity for the stage and a profound love of the English language.

Ian studied theater and writing at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. There, he trained with actor Robert Westenberg, best known for his roles as the Prince and the Wolf in Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” whom he attributes much of his ability and technique as an actor. The highlight of his undergraduate training came when he received the award for Best Actor in an One-Act Play as Jack in “Anatomy of Temptation.”

Following graduation, Ian continued his career in Saint Louis by portraying Ivan in the world premiere of “The Cats of Korcula,” Joseph Collins in the world premiere of “Scutter Murphey’s Wake,” Malcolm in “Macbeth,” Arcite in The “Two Noble Kinsmen.” He also toured with the Stone Soup Shakespeare Company in the Midwest, and performed poetry for schoolchildren around the country with the company Poetry Alive!

Early this year, Ian made the transition to the New York theatre scene and has already performed in two off-off-Broadway productions, including “Richard III” with the Gallery Players. Additionally, he has also appeared in several staged readings of “Henry VI,” “Richard III” and “King Lear” with the company.

See Ian perform in “Divine Comedy” running Sept. 30 through Oct. 22, at Grand Hall. Tickets can be purchased at www.SmartTix.com.
